My immediate response is that none of that is actually their philosophy but rather their practical/political behaviors. All that is rather troublesome, I admit.
The state of personal denial and self-mastery for the sake of others fascinates me.
Part of what makes a good story are bad guys with good goals/intentions and good guys who screw up or have problematic personality traits.
